FAO Asia-Water is pleased to invite you to participate Irrigation ICT e Conference at the forum of www.asia-water.org on 26 December 2016 – 26 January 2017
The Irrigation ICT e-conference is based on the review of attached four countries’ reports in Bangladesh, China, India, and Nepal to analyze existing ICT technologies and trends to improve irrigation management. You are most welcome to provide comment and feedback on the discussion topics below. The summary of contribution and inputs from the e-Conference will be integrated in future FAO reports.

Asia is facing two transitions: a structural transformation of agriculture and a transition to sustainable agriculture. Managing these dual transitions that require maintaining growth in one hand and ensuring environmental sustainability on the other, is challenging. These transitions also strongly shape the agricultural water management. Managing the transitions need to be addressed through new practices and investment where innovation in technology and in management plays central role.
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) application is more recent, it facilitates the collection and analysis of data and information on water management and in water services in several ways. It has been applied in mapping of water resources, designing early warning systems, and in developing real time decision support systems in water management. The innovation and change in technology continues with profound impact in resource management, system operation, and pattern of service delivery and accountability to the end users in water sector.
In order to have improved understanding on how the emerging technological innovation is shaping the water resource management landscape in the region, RAP conducted case studies for four countries to analyse various forms of technology and their applicability and adoptability in the context of these agricultural transformations and transitions indicated earlier. A key focus area of this study is to understand application of various forms of technology in local water management that directly supports rural livelihood so as to design technology based water intervention program avoiding negative impacts on rural poor.

Each above topic is the concerning issue of the conducted country case studies. The objective for this e-Conference is to get your feedback and comments on these four case studies. The e-Conference will help to further build knowledge for irrigation ICT as well as the SWOT analysis (the advantages, the disadvantages, the opportunities and the threats) to improve technology in irrigation and water management.
